What does Abdominoplasty involve?

Also known as the Tummy tuck, Abdominoplasty is a procedure that is carried out surgically to help to reshape and contour the area of the tummy. It will remove any excess skin and fat deposits from the abdominal area. The abdominal muscles will be tightened and the abdomen will benefit from a more toned and shapely appearance. Every treatment is tailored to the individual's specific needs. The results of this type of surgery can vary from person to person and once you have had the chance to speak to one of our treatment coordinators, we will be able to help you decide on your ideal treatment option.

At our clinic, we will tailor treatment options for each patient and during the time that you are consulting with your surgeon, your individual requirements will be noted along with your expectation and the goal that you have. Being in full possession of these facts your surgeon will then be able to advise you about which Abdominoplasty is likely to offer you the results that you want.

STEP BY STEP - Tummy Tuck Clinic

1

The very first step of your Tummy tuck surgery at our private clinic in Turkey will be for submission of your medical history as well as photographs of your torso. With these your surgeon will be able to assess which type of treatment you should consider, discuss with you the likely outcome of surgery and will point out what risks are associated with that procedure.

2

On your arrival in Istanbul, your consultation will begin with an examination of your abdomen, and at this point your surgeon will decide finally that the type of Tummy tuck you have elected to have will indeed be the best one for you. Then it will be time to check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day exploring the historic and welcoming city that sits between the East and the West.

3

In most cases surgery will be scheduled for the day after your arrival. You will be given instruction on fasting, which will be necessary because your operation will be done under general anaesthetic. At the clinic you will have a blood test and then preparation for surgery will begin. The duration of the surgery will be between two and five hours, depending on how complex that surgery is going to be.

4

Following your surgery you will need to stay in the clinic for one or two nights to be medically supervised. Once your surgeon is convinced that all is well, he or she will discharge you from the hospital and give you instructions on aftercare. You will then visit the clinic once more so that your operating surgeon can give you a final examination to ensure that everything is going well.

What are the different Types of Abdominoplasty Surgery?

You may not be aware that there are several different tell me tuck procedures. These are the three most commonly performed Tummy tuck procedures:

full tummy tuck

The Full Tummy tuck

The full Tummy tuck is one of the most commonly asked for procedures. It is a more complex undertaking than the standard Tummy tuck. This is because a full Tummy tuck will involve removal of excess fat and tightening of the skin, just like the other method. But then it will also suture the abdominal wall muscles and reposition the belly button.

mini tummy tuck

The Mini Tummy Tuck

Mini abdominoplasty or the mini Tummy tuck is a less complex procedure than a full Tummy tuck. This particular procedure is favoured by patients who are not carrying an excess amount of fat but may have excess skin below the belly button. Commonly these will be patients who have had children and developed diastasisorhernias. There is no requirement for the belly button to be repositioned in the mini Tummy tuck.

reverse tummy tuck

The Reversive Tummy tuck

This particular kind of Tummy tuck is the one that is quite often used for a patient who may have lost a lot of weight and been left with sagging skin on the chest or the abdomen. During this procedure the surgeon will make an incision under the breast along the skin folds. Quite commonly in this procedure, breast augmentation or lifting will be performed along with the skin tightening surgery.

Various Procedures

Quite commonly abdominoplasty operations will be divided into categories. The time that the surgery takes will very much depend on how complex that surgery is. For example, complete abdominoplasty will take from one to five hours. The mini abdominoplasty will most often take one and two hours

These are the steps of a Complete (full) abdominoplasty

The Partial abdominoplasty

These are the steps of a A partial (or mini) abdominoplasty

steps of an Extended abdominoplasty

These are the steps of an Extended abdominoplasty

In this procedure a complete abdominoplasty is carried out as well as a lateral thigh lift. The scar from the operation will run down the posterior maxillary line. This operation offers the contouring of a complete abdominoplasty but also allows for enhancement of the area around the waist and smoothing of the contours in the upper lateral thigh.

steps of a High lateral tension tummy tuck

These are the steps of a High lateral tension Tummy tuck

This particular technique will take slightly over 41/2 hours to complete. Where the conventional abdominoplasty operation will tighten muscles in a line that is vertical, this new method, called a high lateral tension abdominoplasty, as well as tightening along the vertical line, tighten horizontally as well. The end result of this new technique can be a dramatically flatter abdomen with a much more defined waistline

steps of a Floating Abdominoplasty or FAB Technique

These are the steps of a Floating Abdominoplasty or FAB Technique

FAB technique is sometimes known as an extended mini abdominoplasty. It will allow for shaping and tightening using a smaller incision that is not based around the naval. Excess skin can be removed through the smaller incision. During the procedure the belly button will be temporarily detached. Once the muscles are reshaped and tightened and from the pubic area to the sternum the navel will be reattached or maybe re-sited 1-2 centimetres lower if that is required. This procedure will be accompanied by liposuction to give a smoother more aesthetic result

steps of a circumferential abdominoplasty

These are the steps of a Circumferential abdominoplasty

In this procedure the extended abdominoplasty is accompanied by a buttock lift. Scars produced from the operation will be right around the patient's body. This operation is sometimes called a belt lipectomy or a lower body lift, a procedure that is often performed on people who have lost very large amounts of weight.

Combination procedures - what is achievable

Liposuction accompanied by an abdominoplasty is known as the lipo tuck and provides thigh, hips and buttock contouring.

Abdominoplasty can also be carried out in conjunction with breast reduction breast lift or sometimes even a hysterectomy, although it will depend on the reason for the hysterectomy.

FAQs

A patient who was suitable to have a Tummy tuck would be any man or woman who is in good health. After reaching a certain age and perhaps having several pregnancies or suffering fluctuations caused by dieting, having hormone induced obesity or for hereditary factors sometimes the skin and the muscles of the abdomen can become very slack. For many people this affects their self-esteem and abdominoplasty can be the ideal procedure to remove the unsightly excess fat and skin that has not responded to liposuction.

While most patients are between 45 and 65 years old, abdominoplasty can be performed on people who have completed their growth at around 20 to 25 years. For women who have lost abdominals contour and structure through childbirth, ideally they would not want to have more children after their abdominoplasty. Likewise somebody who has lost a lot of weight and needs to tighten their abdominal muscles needs to be prepared not to gain weight again to achieve the best possible results from this procedure.

You might be surprised to know that there is an ideal time of the year to have a Tummy tuck and that is in the autumn! Usually people are more active in the summer and more aware of their body shape, weigh less and have lost weight more than they will in the winter when they're outside less and eating more.

Deciding to have plastic surgery is a personal choice and it's up to you to make sure that you are approaching this for the right reasons and with realistic expectations. You need to know all about the procedure including the risk factors not only from the surgery but from the general anaesthetic you will need, as well. Whatever your concerns you should discuss them with your surgeon, preoperatively. Make sure that you understand what's going to happen and importantly that you are doing the surgery for the right reasons.

  1. In preparation for the procedure you will have a blood test, any medical treatment you are having will be looked at and adjusted if necessary. You should not smoke and you should not take aspirin or any naturopathic treatment or anti-inflammatory treatment that is likely to inhibit blood clotting. The night after your operation you will stay in hospital so that you can be monitored and recover from the anaesthetic.
  2. You will have appointments with both the anaesthetist and the surgeon and if you need one you will have a translator so that you can be sure that you understand and are understood.
  3. The operation: Once you have had your anaesthetic the operation will begin as the surgeon makes a horizontal incision in the abdomen between the navel and the pubic area. The length of that incision will depend on how much skin the surgeon is going to remove. Once lifting of the abdominal skin has taken place then repair of the abdominal muscles can begin. In a complete abdominoplasty there will be a second incision around the belly button to enable removal of excess skin in the upper abdominal area. The skin will then be brought down to be sewn to the lower abdomen while a hole for the naval to be re-sited to will be made and sewn to the surface of the abdomen
  4. After you've spent your first post operative night in the hospital you will need to rest. The bandages that have been applied will be removed a few days later and threads or stitches removed around about 10 days by your own family doctor. The drains running along the surface of the abdomen will be placed so that they can drain any fluid build-up that there is postoperatively. These tubes are very fine and fragile but using them for one to two weeks will help you to heal faster. Pain killers might also be prescribed as well as some creams for healing and other medications to reduce any infection arising. Initially the wearing of a corset to help support the operative area. You will also be given a follow up appointment with your surgeon.

Abdominoplasty is a very successful plastic surgery and gets great results. It will, however, always leave a scar.  This scarring will fade in time and a skilled surgeon will usually ensure that the scar is discreet at the bikini line and invisible under any clothing including underwear and even swim wear.

The most important quality you need to have after an abdominoplasty is patience! Convalescence following this procedure can be around two to three weeks of rest and then a very gradual return to professional and domestic activity and at least three months abstinence from yoga or swimming or any similar exercise. The full results should be visible at around three to six months but it can take up to a year to fully appreciate the results of the abdominoplasty and the new shape you have achieved as well as your new flat stomach. Living a healthy lifestyle with a good diet and regular exercise will certainly help to enhance your results as well as avoiding any weight gain.

Several components make up the price of a Tummy tuck procedure and will include the anaesthetist fee as well as the surgeons fee and the fee for the hospital. What you pay will also cover post operative and preoperative care. The cost of your tummy tuck procedure in Turkey will vary because it will be tailored uniquely to you but you will be given a detailed quotation after your first consultation with your surgeon.

You will need to wear an abdominal binder for around 6 weeks. This will help to avoid fluid build-up and will also support your abdomen. Although the healing period for a mini-tummy tuck is shorter you will still have to avoid any strenuous activities including heavy lifting and vigorous activities, for 6 weeks.

Pregnancy affects the body but it will recover slowly after childbirth. Having plastic surgery after becoming pregnant will make the skin sag and stretch more. As the abdominal muscles separate, you will have more stomach fat than before. Better to wait until after you have finished having children for this procedure.

Liposuction is a helpful alternative to Tummy Tuck. If you are not overweight and want to shed some fat from particular body parts then liposuction is for you!

Yes. Both liposuction and Tummy Tuck are popular combined plastic surgery options in Turkey. If you plan to have both surgeries at a time you will avoid a second general anaesthesia including more cost, risk, and a longer recovery.

Your surgeon will recommend you wear the bodysuit for 6 weeks then for half a day for 4 weeks and then for a full day for 2 weeks to promote your recovery.
