High Lateral Tension Tummy Tuck

There are different techniques that surgeons use when they perform a tummy tuck. A traditional abdominoplasty is what comes under the general heading of “tummy tuck.” A tummy tuck’s aim is to remove from the abdomen, any excess skin, and tighten up the muscles of the abdomen.

Over time, after significant weight loss or one or more pregnancies, the abdominal skin becomes stretched and lax and large pockets of fat can be difficult to shift. Even when a woman has lost weight, the skin may droop and sag. Excess skin can, of course, be removed, in the traditional way but the sleek or contoured shape that most patients want may be best achieved with the high- lateral tension technique.

How does the High Lateral Tension Technique differ?

Although it is similar to the traditional procedure, in that the high lateral tummy tuck removes excess skin as well as tightening the abdominal muscles, this particular technique has a few aspects that are different:

  • High lateral tension tummy tucks produces more defined contouring.
  • The traditional tummy tuck focuses tension below the belly button to smooth and flatten the stomach - the thighs and the sides of the waist are not smoothed.
  • A high-lateral tummy tuck pulls both vertically and horizontally, to even out the tension over all the abdomen and to lift any loose skin that there is on a patient’s thighs.
  • The technique carries out repairs on three plains rather than the two levels of a traditional tummy tuck.
  • The high-lateral tummy tuck tightens the abdominal muscles and the skin including skin that under the breasts.

Who would be a good candidate for a High-Lateral Tummy Tuck?

men and women can benefit from a high-lateral tension tummy tuck and both will appreciate the enhanced contouring that is offers. For women it is better to wait until they have no plans to have any more children, for best results.

What happens during surgery for a High-Lateral Tummy Tuck?

Very similarly to the tradition tummy tuck the high-lateral tension tummy tuck’s first incision is will be placed along the midline, from one hip to the other. Your surgeon will then tighten the abdominal muscles, repairing them, if necessary. The skin will then be re-draped and any excess will be removed so that the loose skin over the thighs is taut. The belly button will be re-sited so that it is symmetrical.

Lastly, ‘high-lateral tension’ will be achieved as the skin beneath the patient’s breasts is tightened so that there is tension between the navel and chest in order that the best contoured and firmest results are achieved. From the bellybutton downwards the skin will moved under low tension to close the incision at the midline. This will remove skin excess and will draw the waist in. Liposuction might also be used to even out any stubborn areas of localized fat deposits.

Would a high lateral tension tummy tuck be a good option for me?

High lateral tension might be the perfect option for you if:

  • You’ve lost a significant amount of weight and have been left with sagging or loose skin across the belly, over your upper thighs, and in your groin area.
  • Your abdominal muscles have separated after one or more pregnancies, weight gain or from excessive exertion. (where abdominal muscles have separated tightening with just exercise will not work.)
  • You are normal weight, or close to it.
  • You do not plan to have any more children.
  • You are a non-smoker or if you smoke, you can guarantee that you will be able to quit for a fortnight both before and after surgery.
